What is an ABA Therapist?
Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy is an evidence-based approach that systematically addresses and modifies behavior. It is particularly effective in enhancing social, communication, and adaptive skills in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). ABA relies on the expertise of dedicated professionals known as Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs) and ABA Therapists (also known as Behavior Technicians at Ovation Behavior Group).
ABA therapy is often delivered using a tiered model. Typically, the model looks like this: The BCBA completes initial and ongoing assessments, conducts parent training, and develops behavior intervention plans and skill acquisition/replacement behavior goals. In addition, the BCBA trains and provides ongoing supervision and support to the Behavior Technician. Working under the supervision of a BCBA, Behavior Technicians play a critical role in fostering positive behavior change and skill development in individuals, particularly those on the autism spectrum.
So what exactly is a Behavior Technician or ABA Therapist? Behavior Technicians are trained professionals committed to applying the principles of ABA under the direction of a BCBA. They show up for daily sessions with their reinforcer bag of goodies in hand, ready to embed program targets into a session filled with fun and learning. With backgrounds typically in psychology or education, they collaborate closely with the BCBA Supervisor to implement interventions specific to each individual. Behavior Technicians play a hands on role in delivering behavior support plans, collecting data on targeted behaviors, and communicating frequently regarding progress with the BCBA. A collaborative and supportive relationship between the BCBA and the Behavior Technician is absolutely crucial in the success of the ABA program.
The BACB has a certification for Behavior Technicians who would like additional training, called the Registered Behavior Technician (RBT). An RBT is a Behavior Technician who has undergone specialized training and certification to implement ABA interventions under the supervision of a BCBA. While not required, this certification ensures a standardized level of competence, making them valuable contributors to the collaborative effort.
Behavior Technicians and RBTs, guided by the supervision of BCBAs, are essential contributors to the success of individuals with autism and developmental disorders. Their dedication makes them integral to implementing ABA services and we are so grateful for ours at Ovation!
